Choosing a Pressure Gauge for Pneumatic Applications: Key Factors to Consider

When choosing a pressure gauge for a pneumatic application, there are several factors to consider to ensure that the gauge is suitable for the application. Here are some key considerations:

  1. Pressure range: Determine the pressure range required for the application. The pressure range should be within the range of the gauge you are considering. It is important to choose a gauge that can measure the pressure accurately and with sufficient resolution.

  2. Accuracy: The accuracy of the gauge is also an important consideration. For most pneumatic applications, a gauge with an accuracy of +/- 1.6% of the full scale is sufficient. However, if high accuracy is required, a gauge with a higher accuracy should be chosen.

  3. Connection type: Consider the type of connection required for the gauge. Most pneumatic applications use a standard NPT connection. However, other connection types, such as BSP or metric, may be required depending on the application.

  4. Mounting: Consider the mounting requirements for the gauge. Some gauges are designed for panel mounting, while others are designed for surface mounting. It is important to choose a gauge that is suitable for the mounting location.

  5. Durability: Choose a gauge that is durable and can withstand the conditions of the application. For example, if the application is in a harsh environment, such as in an industrial setting, a gauge with a rugged construction and protective features, such as a stainless steel case, may be required.

  6. Display type: Consider the type of display required for the gauge. Analog gauges have a needle that moves across a scale, while digital gauges have a digital readout. Some gauges have both analog and digital displays.

  7. Additional features: Consider any additional features that may be required for the application, such as a dampening mechanism to reduce the effect of pulsations, or a backlit display for low light conditions.
