NEW! Re-engineered SV Series Connectors with Integral Valve

RFQ - SV Series Connectors
More Information

NOSHOK has re-engineered our SV Series Connectors with Integral Valve for significantly easier assembly and ease of use. The patent-pending new design consolidates components to allow users to assemble and attach the connectors to an installation in a few easy steps without requiring rotation of the valve.

NOSHOK SV Series Connectors are designed to reinforce the entire installation by shifting radial-stress load away from the NPT connections.

SV Connectors feature a 0.375" bore, a non-rotating stem tip standard, and a blow-out proof stem that provides a secondary stem seal in the full open position.

Additional features include a metal body-to-bonnet seal, and a FKM o-ring seal and PTFE back-up ring below the stem threads to protect from corrosion and galling. Set includes PTFE gaskets and Carbon Steel bolts for manifold installation. An optional dielectric barrier is available to create a non-conductive shield between the instrument and the orifice fitting.

Choosing the Right Pressure Transmitter for Refrigeration Systems

Pressure measurement is essential in refrigeration systems, and using the right pressure transmitter is key to ensuring a long-lasting system. This article will outline some important factors to keep in mind when selecting a pressure transmitter for refrigeration applications.

Where Refrigeration Systems Are Found:
Refrigeration is used in various industries, from food and beverage to healthcare and chemical processing. For example:

  • Food and Beverage: More than just food coolers, these systems involve complex setups for chilling.
  • Healthcare: Blood banks and laboratories rely on refrigeration for preserving biological and pharmaceutical materials. During blood transfer, ambulances must have refrigeration equipment on their vehicles for medication stored onboard and the refrigeration system must remain running while the vehicle is idle at the station.
  • Chemical Facilities: Large-scale refrigeration systems are critical in processing plants.

Key Specifications for Pressure Transmitters in Refrigeration

  • Pressure Levels: Typically, low pressures are needed—under 75 psi on the evaporation side and up to 300 psi on the condensing side.
  • Temperature Range: Most systems require a transmitter that can handle temperatures from -40 to 125 °C to cover both ambient and colder internal temperatures.
  • Process Connections: Common connections like National Pipe Thread (NPT) in the U.S. and G1/4 internationally are standard. In U.S. refrigeration, the 7/16-20 Schrader connection is often used.
  • Output Signal: Most systems use common signals like 4-20 mA or 0.5-4.5 Vdc, depending on control requirements.
  • Environmental Protection: Transmitters usually need IP ratings to resist dust and water ingress (IPx5 to IPx8), especially to prevent issues from frost and condensation.

Considerations for Moisture and Low Temperatures

  1. PT30 Series High Performance Fixed
    Range Transmitters & Transducers
Low-Temperature Fill Fluid: In low-temperature settings, standard silicone oil in the sensor can become too thick, slowing down response time. Special low-temp fill fluids can help maintain accuracy but may cost more and take longer to get.
  2. Humidity and Moisture Ingress: Many low-pressure sensors have a vent (the "backside vent") to allow accurate gauge measurements, but this vent can let humid air inside. In cold conditions, this air can condense, damaging electronics. Using sealed gauge transmitters or fully potted electronics (encased in protective material) can prevent moisture issues.

By focusing on these factors, you can select a pressure transmitter that meets the unique demands of refrigeration systems, helping to maintain performance and longevity. NOSHOK’s PT30 Series High Performance Fixed Range Transmitters & Transducers, for example, are designed to handle these needs specifically for refrigeration applications. Read more

Tech Tip

Installing NOSHOK 621 and 622 Pressure Transmitters in Class 1, Div 1 & 2 Hazardous Locations: NFPA, NEC, OSHA & IEC Compliance

More Information

The installation and construction of instrumentation in Class 1, Division 1 and 2 hazardous locations is specified by several governing bodies including NFPA, NEC, OSHA, and IEC. NOSHOK’s 621 and 622 hazardous location pressure transmitters are suitable for installation in these locations with a notable option that works in conjunction with the location installation methods and practices.

The National Electrical Code and International Electrotechnical Commission develop standards and best practices for installation of electrical equipment in hazardous locations to prevent accidents caused by explosive substances. In Class1, Division 1 and 2 hazardous locations, explosive gas can be present and ignited by electrical equipment. To prevent accidents created by these ignitions, the IEC and NEC standards prescribe installation methods, equipment, and procedures for electrical equipment and electrical power distribution systems. One specific detail prescribed by these standards is the installation of electrical conduit and penetrations into electrical enclosures.

Class 1, Division 1 and 2 classified areas employ a protection scheme that allows for ignition of hazardous substances but prescribes the containment of those ignitions so that they do not propagate further into additional hazardous areas. This is different from the intrinsic safety standard that employs a strategy of ignition prevention by limiting electrical energy distribution and storage in hazardous locations. Considering an electrical enclosure and a conduit penetration, the explosion proof standard allows for an ignition of hazardous gas in the enclosure but requires that the conduit penetrating the enclosure to be sealed with an approved conduit seal. Additionally, there are additional requirements of the electrical enclosure itself.

NOSHOK 621 and 622 explosion proof transmitters meet the requirements of Class 1, Division 1 and 2 rating with an electrical enclosure that can contain a hazardous substance ignition and an electrical connection that is available in two different types.

The 1/2 NPT male conduit with 6' integral cable (-6 electrical connection option) is the standard electrical connection option. This option should be chosen when the installation methods in the hazardous location include the use of rigid electrical conduit and hazardous location rated conduit seal fittings. While the 621 and 622 electrical enclosure can contain the ignition of hazardous substances, the penetration of the electrical connection (integral cable) can allow hot gases from the ignition to escape and enter the conduit. The conduit seal at this junction therefore is used to prevent the ignition from traveling further into the electrical conduit system.

The 1/2 NPT male conduit with 6' flying leads with epoxy seal (-37 electrical connection option) is an alternate option that adds an integral epoxy seal to this electrical cable penetration. This additional seal then acts as an integral and approved conduit seal and displaces the need for an additional external conduit seal. This option can be chosen when the standard installation practices of the hazardous location allow for integral approved conduit seals and removal of traditional external conduit seals.

NOSHOK 621 and 622 Series pressure transmitters offer the flexibility to select either an integral, approved hazardous location conduit seal or a standard electrical connection, allowing for easy alignment with the specific installation practices of your hazardous location.
